I-AMM: The Defining Moment

What does it mean to be Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim or South Asian (AMEMSA) in the United States? What does it feel like? How are mixed-race and/or mixed-religion community members seen and do they feel like they belong? Is AMEMSA a socio-political identity group? What is assimilation and how much of it is healthy? What does it mean to be white-passing or white-adjacent? What is “aspiring to whiteness?” Are we all People Of Color (POC)? Are we POC if we pass as white? What does anti-Blackness look like in the community? What is racism and racialization and why do we need to talk about them? How do the third culture community members reconcile different ways of being? How does it feel like to be LGBTQIA+ and Muslim? Is it really necessary to create connections between AMEMSA sub-communities?

These are some of the questions we tackle in series 1 and 2 of The Defining Moment.

Note: We used the term AMM (Arab, Muslim or Middle Eastern) in our first 2 podcast series. We’ve moved over to the term AMEMSA because it is a more comprehensive grouping.
